Does my lawn need aerating?
Aeration helps make the yard thicker and improve the effectiveness of the irrigation, fertilizers, and pest control programs. Take this quiz to find out if your yard would benefit from aeration.
First, what is Aeration?
Aeration will help the fertilizer reach the roots of your grass, enhance the breakdown of thatch, and will help you use water more efficiently. Sometimes Lawn aeration is called core aeration. This is the removal of small plugs of turf, thatch, and soil from the lawn.

It sounds like it’s time to aerate your lawn. We usually do lawn aeration annually. If your lawn is showing the signs listed above your soil may be compacted and most likely will need to be aerated. Are you planning to DIY? Here’s what you need to know:
- Know your type of grass. Aeration should only occur when the grasses are actively growing
- Rent or purchase an aerating machine
- Clearly mark all sprinkler heads, irrigation lines and other underground lines in your yard that could get damaged during the aeration
- It helps to water the lawn thoroughly the day before
- Plan to seed and fertilize after core aeration
- Let the plugs disintegrate into the yard
